Top 5: Bands. (Part 1)

I really, really enjoyed writing the last ‘Top 5’ post I did, so I’ve decided to give a Bands Top 5 a go. I do feel that it needs to be said upfront and outright, these are my personal favorite bands. Across all genres, this is a list of bands that I just never want to not be able to listen to. (You try writing that sentence without using a double negative!!) I don’t so much care if you don’t like them or you think they were not the basis for all music, this is my list, go make your own if you care so damn much!

Mindless Self Indulgence–It’s actually a really good thing that I mentioned that this list is across genres as this band just by itself doesn’t fit into a single category. They are a bit rock, a bit hip hop with some electronic influenced music slipped in…and their sound is a bit on the insane side. I’ve been a fan since I was about 14 and here’s that story cos I want to tell it:

When I was younger, my mom lived in like another city and my dad ran an auto parts store which meant he was there, well pretty much all hours of the day. I had to come across new CD’s in…creative ways. I lived in a suburb that didn’t have public transport and the nearest place to buy non-edited CD’s was Best Buy, like over 5 miles away from my house. I had a friend who went there every Tuesday though and would send him with my 20-30$ in allowance money each week and he would bring me back CD’s. Easy Peasy. One day, he brought me back “System of a Down” System of a Down and “Make Yourself” by Incubus. The third CD he brought in was not for me. It was called “Frankenstein Girls will Seem Strangely Sexy” and it was by this band called Mindless Self Indulgence. Not only was this CD that he purchased with my money not for me (I was pretty OK with him buying one for himself every other week or so out of my cash), I wasn’t even allowed to listen to it. His theory being that if someone like me who liked nu-metal and classic rock liked the band they would become mainstream and thusly, no longer “cool”. (Seriously? Don’t bands release music so that people can hear it?!) Although he did let the perky blonde cheerleader in our home room listen to a song called “Clarissa”. Hey man, I watched Clarissa Explains it All…BIG FAN! However, I decided it was what it was and I gave up on trying to convince him I was not so mainstream that it would destroy his favorite underground band.

Until he switched schools the next year and the third friend in our little group decided that he didn’t give a fuck and wanted me to hear this band. I fell in love. They were the anthem of angst ridden teenager with more than a dash of manic energy. I have purchased nearly every CD they have ever put out, even the imports and remixes. Only one I never got was “Despierta Los Ninos”….too expensive for my broke ass in every record store I’ve seen it in. Even had an original copy of “Tight”….until my entire CD collection got stolen along with pretty much everything else I owned that I put into storage when I got to LA.

This is also the only band that I have ever gone out of my way to see them perform live. Generally, if a show isn’t happening within about 25 miles of where ever I am, I’m not going to see it. I am notoriously horrible about taking care of my cars properly and that translates into not trusting them to drive very far. But for MSi, I’ve made it a rule to go to any show that is under 5 hours away. I’ve only gotten to use this rule once, but hey….I couldn’t travel to Oklahoma City when my uncle was on his deathbed. I borrowed someone else’s car on the pretense of a lie to be able to go see them there.

Yeah, this one went on way too long, going to try and be more concise for the next few. I love music. Really, I do. Could keep this one going for hours. In fact, I think I may just do that. We’ll call all of that rambling “Part 1”. Ta for now though!
